Public school corporations in Indiana provide primary and secondary education to students. There are 293 public school corporations in Indiana with resident populations ranging from 1,338 (New Harmony Town and Township School Corporation) to 296,715 (Indianapolis Public School Corporation). These public school corporations also have the smallest and largest number of students (169 and 33,080, respectively). Many public school corporations provide transportation to and from school facilities and finance school buildings in addition to the core responsibility of education.

In addition to variations in efficiency, differences in school corporation expenditures are likely related to differences in spending on capital projects (such as buildings), transportation, and school programs (such as special needs education). The cost of transporting students varies based on the geographic area of the school corporation.

The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance has compiled Total Expenditures Per Capita and Expenditures Per Student data for all Indiana public school corporations since 2005. Listed next is a year-by-year comparison of the Lebanon Community School Corporation Total Expenditures Per Capita and Expenditures Per Student compared to the average and median for all Indiana public school corporations. The median is the expenditures per capita amount where half the public school corporations spend more and half spend less.

The per capita and per student spending of the Lebanon Community School Corporation (LCSC) have been pretty much "middle of the pack" when compared with other Indiana public school corporations. However, the LCSC has embarked on an overbuild-it-and-they-will-come capital projects campaign that will increase future school expenditures significantly if there are more capital project bond issues and/or an approved operating funds referendum before 2023: see http://www.finplaneducation.net/the_whole_truth.htm.

The costly LCSC capital projects campaign has been undertaken at the behest of the Greater Lebanon Community Vision Committee, which wants Lebanon to become "Fishers West" with suburban sprawl, high taxes, and runaway utility costs. Concerned Lebanon citizens who favor orderly municipal growth that is NOT supported by tax and utility rate increases must let our elected "public servants" know they are headed in the wrong direction!
